Let’s face one potential worry to start with: it’s ok, you’re probably not too old, or too young. Brazilian Jiujitsu is for everyone, and it’s going to be fine. When you arrive, your instructor will know how to put you at ease. But why not get prepared by turning up with the right gear at least, to save you having to borrow someone else’s Gi. Brands like Venum BJJ or Tatami Fightwear are perfect for beginners and more experienced BJJers alike. They are designed to quality BJJ fight gear at an affordable price. We stock the full range and we can help advise on the kind of fit you need, and the colour and style you’ll want to look for.
What will happen at the training session? You’ll probably have a short warmup first, just to make sure your body is prepared to start training. After the warm up, there will probably be a bit of a class demo by the instructor to teach a particular move or technique. There will be other beginners there too, most likely, so don’t worry if you need a bit of support to start with. They’ll be used to that. The class will probably end with a session where BJJers can try out their moves and spar. By then you’ll be starting to get an idea of how comfortable you feel with BJJ, but don’t be put off if the first session still feels a bit new.
Beginners’ BJJ is a great way to get into fitness and to learn a new skill. So if it’s something you’ve thought about for a while but never quite had the confidence to go to that first training session, give it a go. We love BJJ.
